Like any exterior finish, it weathers gradually over time. The warranty covers excess color change beyond normal weathering.
James Hardie siding styles come in a wide range to suit any taste. For a traditional look, the Lap Siding features wide boards with beveled edges. The James Hardie Vertical Siding option creates a more modern aesthetic with narrow boards that are installed in a vertical orientation. If you’re looking for something truly unique, the James Hardie Shingle Siding style features rough-hewn boards with a textured surface. HardieShingle carries the same 30-year non-prorated substrate warranty as the rest of the Hardie siding line.
Vinyl is the least expensive option upfront. Hardie fiber cement costs more but carries a 30-year non-prorated substrate warranty, where vinyl warranty terms vary widely by manufacturer. Brick is typically the most expensive and needs the least refinishing over its service life. For a mid-priced option with a long warranty term, Hardie is worth comparing.
It is important to follow some basic care guidelines in order to keep your siding looking its best. Regularly sweep or hose down your siding to remove any dirt or debris. ColorPlus® Technology finishes carry a separate 15-year warranty covering peeling, cracking, and chipping, including paint and labor. HardieTrim is 15 years. Coverage transfers once, applies to materials rather than labor, and requires installation to James Hardie specs using the HZ5 product line for Colorado. Our workmanship warranty covers the install.
We don’t recommend DIY installation. James Hardie requires installation in accordance with its published specifications: correct nailing depth, clearances at grade and rooflines, and proper joint treatment. Getting any of these wrong can void the manufacturer’s warranty, regardless of who installed it. Cutting fiber cement also generates silica dust, which requires either a HEPA-filtered saw or a specialized shear to cut safely; this isn’t a job for a standard circular saw and a dust mask.
