Artisan is James Hardie’s premium architectural line: thicker boards, deeper shadow lines, and mitered corners instead of corner trim, which is the detail that makes a lap wall read as custom rather than production. It costs more per square than standard HardiePlank and earns it on the front elevation of a higher-end home. The Hardie Artisan line is where we start when the architecture deserves the upgrade.
Allura is the other major fiber cement substrate we install, available in lap, panel, and shingle profiles and, like Hardie, noncombustible. It is also one of the two boards Woodtone applies its finishes to, so many of the rustic-finish walls you see in the foothills are Allura underneath. We specify it on its own when a project’s profile, budget, or lead time favors it over Hardie.
Nichiha is what we reach for when the drawing says panels. Its architectural fiber cement comes in large formats with wood, stone, and metal finishes, and it hangs on a clip-and-rail rainscreen that leaves a drainage gap between panel and wall. That system is the reason Nichiha’s architectural panels show up on Boulder’s modern infill and mountain-modern builds, and it is the part that has to be done exactly right.
Woodtone is not a substrate; it is a factory-applied wood-look finish that goes onto fiber cement boards from Hardie or Allura. The point is a rustic, variegated grain that ordinary solid colors do not attempt, without cedar’s maintenance. If the goal is a mountain cabin look on a noncombustible wall, Woodtone’s prefinished wood-look finishes are usually the answer.
One more, because it comes up on every third call: board and batten is a style, not a material. Wide vertical boards with narrow battens over the joints can be built in fiber cement from any of the lines above, or in engineered wood or metal. Yes, on install day. Over the life of the siding, it usually costs less because it is not repainted or replaced on the same schedule, and it takes hail and wind without the repairs the other two need.
Not on its own. It can chip at cut edges if handled roughly during installation, and a severe hail impact can leave a mark, but it does not develop the hairline cracks stucco does or the checking cedar does.
Not for a long time. Hardie’s ColorPlus and Woodtone’s finishes are factory-applied; Nichiha panels come prefinished. You can repaint fiber cement whenever you want a new color, and it takes paint well.
Heavier than vinyl and wood, which is part of why wind does not move it. On a normal wood-framed Boulder house, that is not a concern, and we confirm the sheathing during the walk-through.
