Evergreen is hard on siding for the simplest reason: it is a wood town at 7,000 feet in a forest. NOAA’s normals for the Evergreen station put the last spring frost at the end of May and the first fall frost in mid-September, which leaves a wall freezing overnight and thawing by lunch most of the year. Add thin-air sun on the south side, snow against the north side until April, and woodpeckers working the fascia, and cedar goes gray, split, and soft inside a decade.

The romance of a cedar house in the pines lasts until the third re-stain. What we find on Evergreen walk-throughs is predictable: south and west walls bleached and checked, north walls green with algae under the eaves where snow sat until spring, and a line of woodpecker holes at the fascia where the birds found insects in the softened wood. T1-11 plywood on the older builds fails differently, wicking water up from the bottom edge until the lower two feet delaminate. Log homes hold up better, but still need finishing every few years.
None of that is a maintenance failure. It is what wood does at 7,000 feet in a forest, and no stain can change the material underneath. Fiber cement changes the material. It carries the same lap reveal, the same cedarmill grain, and the same shingle patterns, on a board that treats water, sun, and beaks as nothing in particular. The look stays; the ladder goes away.

North walls in Evergreen spend months behind a snowbank and the rest of the year in tree shade. Wood siding in that spot stays damp, grows algae and mildew, and rots at the bottom course. Fiber cement does not absorb water, so there is nothing for the growth to feed on and nothing to rot. A hose in June is the whole treatment.
At this elevation, the sun is strong enough to chalk a field-applied stain on a south wall in two or three summers. A factory-cured finish on a cement board fades slowly and evenly instead, and the board underneath does not check or cup while it waits for the next coat. Repainting becomes a color decision rather than a rescue.
Two hundred and fifty freeze-thaw days a year would open every joint on a wood wall; fiber cement barely moves, so caulk lines and flashing stay tight. The material is also noncombustible, which matters because most of Evergreen is inside the county’s wildfire overlay. Fiber cement is a category, and the six options below solve different problems on a mountain home. Most Evergreen houses end up with two of them, a field material and a gable accent, and that mix is where the design work happens.
The volume line is the usual replacement for cedar lap or T1-11 when the goal is a matching reveal in a solid color. HZ5 boards are built for freeze-thaw climates, ColorPlus color is cured at the factory, and the cedarmill texture reads as wood from the driveway.
James Hardie’s thicker architectural boards, with deeper shadow lines and mitered corners in place of corner trim. On a hillside rebuild where the front elevation gets all the attention, Artisan is the plank that looks custom because it is.
The other major fiber cement substrate we install, in lap, panel, and shingle profiles, and noncombustible like Hardie. Allura is one of the two boards Woodtone finishes, so a good share of the rustic-finish walls in the foothills are Allura underneath. We specify it when the profile, budget, or lead time favors it.
Large-format architectural panels in wood, stone, and metal finishes, hung on a clip-and-rail rainscreen with a drainage gap behind. Nichiha is the answer for mountain-modern builds with big flat walls and clean lines, and the rainscreen detail is the part that has to be installed exactly right.
A factory wood-look finish, not a board, is applied to Hardie or Allura fiber cement with a variegated cedar or barnwood grain that solid colors cannot imitate. If you want the cabin look and are done with staining, this is where most Evergreen conversations end up.
